Recovery and Politics in Post-Earthquake Nepal

Tuesday, January 12th, 2016 – SAI – Room no. 316, 2-4 pm

A devastating earthquake struck Nepal on 25 April 2015, killing thousands, injuring tens of thousands more, and damaging and destroying hundreds of thousands of houses, as well as public infrastructure. Less than three weeks later, on 12 May 2015, another major quake hit, bringing further destruction and misery. Recovery and reconstruction plans have since been implemented slowly leaving many without the aid they urgently need to survive the winter and to rebuild. Factors preventing a faster response during the second half of 2015 were political agreements to fast-track Nepal’s new constitution, the formation of a new government, subsequent political protests, as well as a blockade on Nepal’s border with India, among others.

Exhibition at International Photography Festival: Patis in Patan – Nodal Points of In/Tangible urban Heritage in Urban Nepal

Cluster Professor Christiane Brosius contributed to the first international photography festival “Photo Kathmandu” with the exhibition “Patis in Patan”, in collaboration with local researchers Dikshya Karki and Rajendra Shakya as well as with artist/curator Sujan Chitrakar. The project was supported by SAI HelpNepal and the cluster research project “Ageing in a transcultural context”.

SAI HelpNepal on International Photofestival

SAI HelpNepal is proud to announce its association with Photo Kathmandu, the first international photography festival in Nepal. The festival will run from 3-9 November 2015 and is widely attributed to the importance and rebuilding of vernacular heritage sites in the historic city of Patan. One of such sites is in the focus of the SAI HelpNepal project “Patis in Patan” that is contributing to the festival.
