Ceremnonial Inauguration of the Heinrich-Zimmer-Chair for Indian Philosophy and Intellectual History on 28th June
The Heinrich-Zimmer-Chair for Indian Philosophy and Intellectual History is a jointly endowed professorship awarded to Heidelberg University by the Indian Council of Cultural Relations. Being the first of its kind in Germany, the chair enhances the leading role of Heidelberg University's South Asia Institute, and more recently the Cluster 'Asia and Europe in a Global Context', in academic relations between India and Germany.

The first chairholder, Prof. Dhruv Raina, is Professor for the History of Science and Education at Jawaharlal Nehru University. His research has focused on the cultures of scientific knowledge in South Asia and the encounter of 'modern' sciences and 'traditional' sciences in colonial India. While the chair will be affiliated to the South Asia Institute and the Cluster 'Asia and Europe', it is designed to encourage intensive exchange and discussion with scholars from other faculties and departments, notably the Department of Philosophy.
This is what makes it, in the eyes of Prof. Dr. Dharampal-Frick (SAI, Dept. of History), so unique:" The Heinrich-Zimmer-Chair will contribute a great deal to liberate Indian philosophical thinking from its niche existence and integrate it into the mainstream of philosophical teaching and research in Germany."
The inauguration will take place on 28th June at 1pm in the Alte Aula of Heidelberg University.
