DWIH Indo-German Winter School on Solar and Stellar Astrophysics

Together with the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in Mumbai, Heidelberg Centre South Asia (HCSA) and our partners from the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, Göttingen University is currently organising the first-ever DWIH Indo-German Winter School on Solar and Stellar Astrophysics.

The German House for Research and Innovation (or DWIH, in German) in New Delhi was set up in October 2012 with the aim of enhancing the outreach of the German science and research landscape in India and exploring opportunities to synergise and stimulate cooperation between the German and Indian scientific communities. This Winter School is a marvellous example for strengthening such ties, bringing together 23 top-level students from India and Germany. The joint faculty are renowned professors and young scholars in this field, from TIFR the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) in Bangalore, IISER Kolkata and Udaipur Solar Observatory. From the German side, faculty include Professor Laurent Gizon, based at the Max-Planck Institute for Solar Systems Research (MPS) in Göttingen and Dr. Hans Ludwig, from the State Observatory of Heidelberg University.

For setting up this Winter School, the academic coordinators, Prof. H.M. Antia and Dr. Shravan from TIFR, and Prof. Siraj Hasan (IIA) had been invited to Germany to visit MPS in Göttingen and Heidelberg University in June this year. During this visit, a one-day Indo-German Network Meeting Astrophysics was held at the Internationales Wissenschaftsforum (IWH) of Heidelberg University, where faculty members had the opportunity to visit the universities and MPIs and to discuss and fine tune this Winter School.

For Indian and German students, this opens up a unique opportunity to be immersed in the field, and to be exposed to lectures and tutorials. While providing such an opportunity, this DWIH Indo-German Winter School Astrophysics will hopefully set an inspiring example and find replications in many fields of Natural and Social Sciences.

Indo-German “Network Meeting Astrophysics“ at Heidelberg and Göttingen (June 25-28th)
In November 2014, the DWIH will conduct its first-ever Winter School,  in the field of Solar and Stellar Astrophysics, at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in Mumbai. In order to discuss and fine tune the curriculum for this event, a four-day Indo-German Network Meeting was held at Göttingen and Heidelberg from June 25th to 28th 2014, organised by the Heidelberg Centre South Asia (HCSA). This meeting brought together joint faculty from renowned Indian Institutes, such as the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) at Bangalore, and the Inter University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA, Pune), the hosts from TIFR, as well as scholars from the Max Planck Institute of Solar Systems (MPS) in Göttingen, the Zentrum für Astrophysik (ZAH) of Heidelberg University, and the Institute of Astrophysics at Göttingen University. The four-member Indian delegation first visited partner institutes at Göttingen (Max Planck Institute for Solar Systems) and at Heidelberg (Institute for Astrophysics, the State Observatory and the House of Astronomy).

On June 27th  a Network Meeting was held at Heidelberg University’s  Internationales Wissenschaftsforum Heidelberg  (IWH), where also other consortium partners from the DWIH New Delhi (Göttingen University and Max Planck Gesellschaft and researchers from Heidelberg University were present. During the one-day  Network Meeting, faculty members presented the core research activities at their respective institutes, and discussed the curriculum for the up-coming Winter School, which will be held at the TIFR during November 3 to 7th 2014. The joint faculty will comprise of  7-8 Indian and German astrophysics scholars, and is open to about 15 students from India and a 5 students from Germany.

The Indian delegation (Prof. H.M. Antia, Prof. Siraj Hasan, Dr. Shravan Hanasoge and Dr. Durgesh Tripathi) and the German partners from the MPS Göttingen (Prof. Laurent Gizon), and Heidelberg (Dr. Hans Ludwig) and Göttingen University (Dr. Warrick Ball), along with the organisers, during the Network Meeting at Heidelberg and Göttingen  (on June 25th and 27th).

Workshop on Agenda for Social Science Research in Afghanistan
24th April 2014, 2:00 to 5:00 pm
Academy of International Studies
Jamia Millia Islamia

As we come closer to the end of 2014 – the deadline for the withdrawal of NATO/ISAF forces from Afghanistan, its time to take stock of the many transitions that Afghanistan is undergoing. For doing so, the Academy of International Studies of Jamia Millia Islamia University (JMI) in New Delhi and the South Asia Institute (SAI) of Heidelberg University’s New Delhi Office have partnered to set a Workshop on “Agenda for Social Science Research in Afghanistan”. The Workshop  has held on the premises of JMI, on April 24th. The half-day event was chaired by His Excellencey Prof. TCA Rangachari and attended by invited scholars from universities, think tanks and political foundations across New Delhi and elsewhere in India. Among those, 12 presented their current research, and outlined their ideas about future social science research.
