Initiated by the Cluster, a Master Programme in Transcultural Studies is being introduced at Heidelberg University. Starting this winter term, students from all over the globe are invited to study the dynamics of transcultural exchanges.

The M.A. Transcultural Studies has an interdisciplinary and transregional focus. Cultures are not seen as ethnically closed, linguistically homogenous, and territorially bounded spheres. Rather, they are understood as being constituted through transformations and entanglements with one another. In this line, students are trained to critically evaluate research tools and methodologies from different disciplines. During the programme, they choose one of the three study foci: "Society, Economy, and Governance", "Visual, Media, and Material Culture", or "Knowledge, Belief, and Religion", each is cutting across disciplines and not confined to one region. As such, it is one of the first M.A. programmes of its kind in Germany.

The M.A. Transcultural Studies starts every winter term and covers two years. The first batch of students will begin in October 2011. Applicants must hold a B.A. or equivalent in a discipline of the humanities or social sciences. Furthermore, they need to prove proficiency in English and two more languages.

International students are highly welcome to submit their applications until June 15, 2011.

Earlier this month the second chairholder of the Heinrich-Zimmer Chair, the Indian Philosopher and Historian Senior Assistant Professor Heeraman Tiwari (JNU, New Delhi) arrived in Heidelberg.



Prof. Tiwari's research focuses on Indian Philosophy (Epistemology, Language, Logic, Moral Philosophy and Buddhist Thoughts); Intellectual History of Ancient and Medieval India; Sanskrit Language and Literature; Hindu, Buddhist and Jaina Religious History; Medieval Hindi Literature and Literary Criticism.
