Prof. Dr. Dietmar Rothermund honored with Order of Merrit of the Federal Republic of Germany and Rabindranath Tagore Cultural Prize 2011

For his achievements for the South Asia Institute, his contributions to the dissemination of knowledge on India and South Asia in Germany and his impressing academic work, Prof. Dietmar Rothermund has been awarded with the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merrit of the Federal Republic of Germany.

The emeritus professor for South Asian History at the Heidelberg University has influenced the image of India in Germany during his 33-years of Teaching at SAI. He had helped to develop the South Asia-Institute to a leading centre for the Study of South Asia. Prof. Dr. Rothermund initiated the Heidelberg Südasiengespäche (Heidelberg South Asia Talks) to promote the exchange between representatives of science, economy and politics. His scientific activities including writings for general audiences find greater national and international resonance.

The Awarding Ceremony will take place at the South Asia Institute on October 20th.

Prof. Rothermund also received the Rabindranath Tagore Culture Prize 2011 of the Indo-German Society for his outstanding contributions towards a better understanding of India in Germany.  Next to Prof. Rothermund this year the musician and producer Günther Paust was awarded with the Rabindranath Tagore Culture Prize 2011. The Rabindranath Tagore Culture Prize was introduced by the Indo-German Society in 1986 to honour unique contributions  for a deeper understanding of Indian cultures and ways of life in German speaking areas.

Our heartfelt congratulations to both of these important awards!
