Ph.D. Student Dominique Marcel Baur

Dominique is a Ph.D. Student at the Cultural and Religious History Department. Having obtained his MA degree in Classical Indology and Philosophy in 2017 from the University of Heidelberg (MA Thesis: “Der Begriff adhikāra im Arthasaṃgraha und in der Arthasaṃgrahakaumudī”), Dominique started his PhD in 2018 under the supervision of Prof. Ute Hüsken. Venturing into Jyotiḥśāstra, his PhD project titled “Lizard-divination in Sanskrit sources” (working title) is concerned with the cultural and historical significance of divination techniques – especially those termed pallīpatana and saraṭaprarohana – which include the observation of lizards. This project is a contribution to the study of omenology and divination, an emerging field in the history of the sciences in South Asia.

His presentation at the 12th International Indology Graduate Research Symposium, Vienna (2021) has been published in “Puṣpikā: Proceedings of the 12th International Indology Graduate Research Symposium, ed. Vitus Angermeier et al. 243-70, 2023.”
