Cultural and Religious History of South Asia (Classical Indology)

The Department of Cultural and Religious History of South Asia (formerly Classical Indology) offers you the exceptional opportunity to explore the rich cultural landscapes of India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka across their entire historical span—from the earliest days to contemporary societies.

Our teaching and research encompass diverse regional traditions, with particular strengths in Vārāṇasī, Nepal, South India, and Sri Lanka. Students can pursue in-depth study of South Asian religions, philosophies, literatures, and social histories while acquiring the language competencies essential for serious scholarship: Sanskrit, Pāli, Tamil, Sinhala, and Nepali.

As one of seven departments within Heidelberg University's renowned South Asia Institute (SAI), you will also benefit from an unusually stimulating academic environment. The Institute's location within the Center for Asian and Transcultural Studies (CATS) enables vibrant exchange across disciplines and regions, while our international faculty, our exceptionally well-equipped library, and extensive global networks create ideal conditions for both emerging and experienced researchers.

Whether your interests lie in ancient philosophical texts, temple traditions, medieval literature, or contemporary cultural transformations, our department provides the expertise, resources, and community to support your intellectual journey into the heart of South Asian Studies.
