Simon Cubelic studierte von 2004 bis 2010 Klassische Indologie und Politische Wissenschaft Südasiens an der Universität Heidelberg und der School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. Im Februar 2017 wurde er im Rahmen des Projekts „Transcultural Legal Flows in 18th- and 19th-century South Asia: Changing Ideas and Practices of Law and Legitimation in Hindu Legal Cultures“ (Cluster of Excellence „Asia and Europe in a Global Context“) an der Universität Heidelberg mit einer Arbeit zur kolonialen Kodifikation des hinduistischen Rechts promoviert. Seit 2014 ist er als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter an der Forschungsstelle „Religions- und rechtsgeschichtliche Quellen des vormodernen Nepal“ der Heidelberger Akademie der Wissenschaften und seit 2020 als Fachreferent an der Südasienabteilung der Bibliothek des Centre for Asian and Transcultural Studies (CATS) beschäftigt. Daneben war er als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Heidelberger Centrum für Transkulturelle Studien (HCTS) sowie als Lehrbeauftragter am Institut für Religionswissenschaft der Universität Heidelberg tätig. Seit 2016 gehört er dem Editorial Board der Interdisziplinären Zeitschrift für Südasienforschung (IZSAF) an.
Seine Forschungsinteressen umfassen die Rechts- und politische Ideengeschichte des vormodernen und kolonialen Südasiens in Sanskrit und Nepālī, Dharmaśāstra-Literatur, nepalische Archivalien und Epigraphik sowie digitale Methoden in der Südasienforschung.
Simon Cubelic studied Classical Indology and Political Science of South Asia at Heidelberg University and the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. In February 2017 he received his PhD from Heidelberg University with a thesis on the colonial codification of Hindu law within the frame of the research project “Transcultural Legal Flows in 18th- and 19th-century South Asia: Changing Ideas and Practices of Law and Legitimation in Hindu Legal Cultures” (Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe in a Global Context”). Since 2014 he has been research associate at the research unit “Documents on the History of Religion and Law of premodern Nepal” of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities and since 2020 academic librarian in the South Asia department of the Centre for Asian and Transcultural Studies (CATS) library. He has also taken appointments as research associate at the Heidelberg Centre for Transcultural Studies (HCTS) and visiting lecturer at the Institute for Religious Studies of Heidelberg University. Since 2016 he serves at the editorial board of the Interdisziplinäre Zeitschrift für Südasienforschung (IZSAF).
His current research focuses on the intellectual history of legal and political thought of premodern South Asia in in Sanskrit und Nepālī, Dharmaśāstra literature, Nepalese archival documents and epigraphy, and digital methods in South Asia research.
