Political Science

The Department of Political Science at the South Asia Institute analyses contemporary political dynamics and events in the various states of South Asia. Our aim is to explore modern South Asia in its diversity, power dynamics and multidimensional developments and to present and discuss them in our teaching.

The focus of our work is on comparative politics and international relations in South Asia. In this context, we analyze governance structures and political processes at the local, national and global levels. Methodologically, we are oriented towards qualitative and historically grounded research methods. This allows us to maintain the highest standards of care and rigor in qualitative social science in order to address the regional focus of South Asia with particular depth.

Multidisciplinary Approach and Focus on Individual Study

The position of our department within the South Asia Institute and the Centre for Asian and Transcultural Studies gives us the unique opportunity to offer multidisciplinary and holistic approaches. This results in in-depth case knowledge and a solid foundation for our theoretical work. In a world whose power dynamics are increasingly determined by Asia, we base our theories on the observation of an emerging world region. Thanks to the diverse range of courses offered by the South Asia Institute, we can offer our students an individualised study profile and ensure professional supervision of their research projects.
