Study Programmes

Students of the Bachelor of Arts “South Asian Studies” (B.A. SAS) can choose the programme of Modern South Asian Studies as an area of specialisation. This programme enables students to engage academically with the region of South Asia. The focus of the degree programme is to provide a solid education in modern languages and literatures, supplemented by an introduction to themes and methods of the discipline.

The M.A. Communication, Literature, and Media in Modern South Asian Languages (KLM) is built on the basis of the B.A. programme and focuses on the study of languages, literature, and various types of media from South Asia. The aim of this four-semester degree programme is to enable students to undertake independent academic research.

Languages offered

One of the special features of the South Asia Institut is its strong focus on modern South Asian languages. Our department offers four South Asian languages in curricular classes starting annually, thus displaying a variety of languages presently unparalleled at German South Asia departments. In addition, other languages are taught on a less intensive level. The main language courses can be supplemented by many follow-up courses on the respective literatures and cultures both on B.A. and M.A. levels. These four languages are:
