We are glad to announce the most recent publication of Prof. Kama Maclean , '"Noisy"' Photographs: Listening to Images from the Civil Disobedience movement in Bombay', in Sumathi Ramaswamy and Avrati Bhatnagar (eds). Photographing Civil Disobedience: Bombay, 1930-1931, New Delhi and Ahmedabad: Alkazi Centre for Photography and Mapin Publishers, 2025.

Photographing Civil Disobedience: Bombay, 1930-31" brings together essays analyzing a rare collection of 245 black-and-white photographs from the Civil Disobedience Movement in colonial Bombay. The images, held in the Alkazi Collection of Photography, capture the city's anticolonial protests and processions, highlighting the role of ordinary people, particularly women, in shaping nationalist politics. This visual history offers a unique perspective on radical collective disobedience and resistance in urban India, making it a valuable resource for scholars of gender studies, urban studies, visual studies, and colonial Indian history.
