Varadarāja temple

The Kanchipuram Research Project is headed by Ute Hüsken Professor for Sanskrit at the Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages at the University of Oslo. Until 11/2008 it was part of the Collaborative Research Center "The Dynamics of Ritual" at the University of Heidel- berg There it was funded by the Deutsche Forsch- ungsgemeinschaft (German Research Council [DFG]).

Ekāmbareśvara

After several years of renovation work the Kumbhābhiṣekam ceremonies at the Ekāmbareśvara-Temple took place from the 27.8.2006 - 31.8.2006. While during the renovation works no major temple festivals were conducted at this largest temple in Kāñcīpuram, the regular schedule was taken up again from late 2006. With regard to the Ekāmbareśvara temple the main field of research will be the interaction of the major deities of the temple with Varadarāja and Kāmākṣī, as they are enacted during the largest temple festival, Mahotsava, performed in June/July every year, and as they are expressed in the relevant eulogical Sanskrit texts (Māhātmyams) praising the diverse gods and goddesses from sectarian perspectives.
