The Kanchipuram Research Project is headed by Ute Hüsken Professor for Sanskrit at the Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages at the University of Oslo. Until 11/2008 it was part of the Collaborative Research Center "The Dynamics of Ritual" at the University of Heidel- berg There it was funded by the Deutsche Forsch- ungsgemeinschaft (German Research Council [DFG]).

  • 1.2.2009: Kerstin Schier, M.A., commences her position as PhD candidate at the Humanistic Faculty of Oslo University. Her project is: “Rivalry and harmony: negotiating gender relations in myth and ritual” (working title).

  • 12.-15.2.2009: Ute Hüsken participates in the third meeting of the "Ritual, Media and Conflict" Group at The Soterbeeck Study Center, The Netherlands.

  • 1.-3.11.2008: Ute Hüsken chairs the session "Loss and found: Emerging Ritual, emerging ritual theory" of the Ritual Studies Group and gives a lecture in a prearranged session of the Buddhist Studies Group dealing with the establishment of a Bhikshuni Order in diverse Buddhist traditions at the Annual Meeting the American Academy of Religion (Chicago).

  • 29.9.-2.10.2008: Eric Venbrux and Ute Hüsken chair a panel on "The Body and Food in Ritual" at the International Conference on "Ritual Dynamics and the Science of Ritual" at Heidelberg University (see https://www.rituals-2008.com/p_18.php).

  • 28.7.-8.8.2008: summer school on "Moving Images and Media Rituals" (https://www.ritualmedia.de/); Erik de Maaker and Ute Hüsken present on "The Visual Toolbox".

  • 25.-29.7.2008: next meeting with the working group on "Ritual, Media, and Conflict" (collaboration with Nijmegen University) in Heidelberg.

  • 23-28.6.2008: Ute Hüsken gives a lecture on "Buddhist monastic rules as ritual and law" at the Vinaya panel of the "XVth Congress of the International Association of Buddhist Studies" in Atlanta (see https://www.religion.emory.edu/iabs2008/).

  • 29.5.2008: Ute Hüsken participates at the Symposion on "Hindu and Buddhist Initiations in Nepal and India" at Heidelberg University (SFB 619) and talks on "Diksha of temple priests in Kanchipuram"

  • 10.4.-16.4.2008: Ute Hüsken visits Krakow University for an exchange on Pancharatra traditions in South India with Dr. Marzenna Czerniak-Drozdzowicz.

  • 3.-8.12.2007: Workshop der "Ritual, Conflict and Media" Group at the Radboud University Nijmegen, The Netherlands.

  • 22.-24.11.2007: Ute Hüsken is invited to give a talk at the conference ?The body in India: Ritual, Transgression, Performativity? in Berlin (organised by the SFB 619, Heidelberg, and the SFB on "Cultures of Performativity" in Berlin. The title of her talk is: "Ritual competence as embodied knowledge".

  • 17.-20.11.2007: The working group "Negotiating Rites" of the SFB organises a panel at the Annual meeting of the AAR in San Diego.

  • 29.-31.10.2007: Anand Mishra will present a paper on PaSSim - Paninian Sanskrit Simulator at the First International Sanskrit Computational Linguistics Symposium organized in The Paris-Rocquencourt Research Center of INRIA (French National Institute for Informatics and Automatics), Paris.

  • 1.10.2007: Ute Hüsken commences her new position as Sanskrit Professor at the Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages, University of Oslo (Norway).

  • 27.9.2007: Anand Mishra will present a paper on Simulating the Paninian System of Sanskrit Grammar at "XXX. Deutscher Orientalistentag" organized in Freiburg im Breisgau from 24.-28. Sept. 2007.

  • 13.9.2007: Ute Hüsken will give a lecture on "Ritual traditions in the South Indian Temple City of Kanchipuram" at the University of Texas, Austin, South Asia Institute.

  • 05.09.2007: Ute Hüsken is invited to talk about "South Indian Temple Rituals" at the Department of History and Classics, Acadia University (Canada).

    Ute Hüsken is invited as a speaker to the ''International Congress on Buddhist Women’s Role in the Sangha. Bhikṣuṇī Vinaya and Ordination Lineages'', held at the University of Hamburg (https://www.congress-on-buddhist-women.org/).

    Dr. Johanna Buss commenced her position as assistant professor at the department for cultural and intellectual history of modern South Asia (Kultur- und Geistesgeschichte des neuzeitlichen Südasien) at the ISTB in Vienna.

  • 24.6.2007-28.7.1007 Field research in Kanchipuram: Brahmotsava at the Varadarāja temple; visits to Udayar Palayam, Melkote and Srirangam.

  • 18.-19.5.2007
    Anand Mishra participates in a symposium on ''Patronage, Performance, and Pilgrimage: Channels of the Flow of Religious Exchange in Early Modern India'' at the Department of Asian Languages and Literature, University of Washington, Seattle. He will read a paper on the ''Shifting Parameters of Religious Discourses — a study of Sri-satsiddhanta-martanda''.

  • 6.5. - 13.5.2007: Barry Stephenson, Assistant Professor (Religious studies) at the Wilfrid Laurier University, Waterloo (Canada) visits the SFB; he will deliver a lecture on 'Ritual, Ritual Studies, and the Mimetic Faculty'.

  • 28.4.-12.5.2007: Professor Ronald L. Grimes (Professor at the Wilfried Laurier University, Canada, and Professor for Ritual Studies at the Radboud University, Nijmegen) visits the SFB for intensive scholarly exchange and consultations of the various subprojects of the SFB.

  • 24.4.-1.5.2007: Next field research in Kanchipuram.

  • 18.-19.4.2007: "Ritual and exchange relations. A workshop held as part of the Sonderforschungsbereich Ritualdynamik. Venue: Raum 011, Institut für Medizinische Psychologie, Universität Heidelberg, Bergheimer Str. 20, Heidelberg. Title of Ute Hüsken's lecture: "Ritual economy at a South Indian temple".

  • 30.3.-5.4.2007: PD Dr. Marzenna Czerniak - Drożdżowicz (Indology, University of Krakow) visits the Kanchipuram Research Project for an intensive scholarly exchange on Pāñcarātra ritual texts and performances in present day India.

  • 23.3.2007 to 01.04.2007: Mahotsava is celebrated at the Ekambaranather temple.

  • 22.02.2007 Dhvajarohana for the Mahotsava at the Kamakshi temple.

  • 2.2.2008, 11:00-13:00: the working group “mediality” meets with Dr Erik de Maaker (Leiden) to discuss various issues of visual anthropology; location: SAI.

  • 1.2.2007, 17:15: Dr Erik de Maaker (Leiden University) will give a talk on „Negotiating Life: Garo Death Rituals and the Transformation of Society”; location: SAI, room Z10.

  • 15.1.2007, 16:00-18:00: Prof Eric Venbrux and Janneke Peelen (Radboud University Nijmegen) will give a talk on “The Refiguration of Death Rites in the Netherlands: Reflections on Ritual Efficacy”.

    SFB meeting; PD Dr. Karin Steiner (Indology) speaks on “efficacy in vedic rituals”, Ute Hüsken speaks on “diverse modes of efficacy –a case study from South India”.

    Ute Hüsken will deliver a lecture on "Text and Performance: Temple rituals in Kanchipuram (South India)" on an invitation from Prof. Arlo Griffith and Dr. Erik de Maaker at Kern Institute and Institute of Cultural and Social Studies.

    Ute Hüsken will participate at the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Religion, to be held in Washington DC, USA. There she will give a talk on ''The Veda in the Āgama'' at the panel on ''Invoking the Veda in the Worship of Siva and Visnu'' of the Hinduism Group of he American Academy of Religion.
