Asia and Europe in a Global Context: Shifting Asymmetries in Cultural Flows
Sprecher: Madeleine Herren, Axel Michaels, Rudolf G. Wagner
This Cluster explores the historical and contemporary changes and inversions of relationships between cultures of Asia and Europe. It perceives these relations as asymmetrical transfer in a global context. Asymmetry is introduced as a cultural scientific concept with heuristic function. The intention is not to diagnose and criticise a lack of symmetries but to contribute to the study of dynamics of cultural flows from various perspectives and through various disciplines and historical backgrounds. The interdisciplinary research design is concentrated on multi-media translations and language competence, reflects historical developments and their effects on the present and it develops a medhotology of globally connected transcultural regional studies. The intention behind this is to study the relevance of global imaginaries and local adaptations and implications. This approach is examined in central and connected research fields: governance and administration, public spheres, health and environment and historicities and heritage. The research architecture of the Cluster includes collaborations with key partners and scholars in Asia as well as the Americas and Europe. A Centre for Advanced Transcultural Studies, new professorships, independent junior research groups, a graduate school for transcultural studies as well as summer schools and master programmes are part of this vast network.
