"What Happens When Local Traditions Goes Global?"

The interface between the local and the global has taken many forms, leading to a number of debates about the way that cultures respond to the forces of globalization and transnationalism. Based on over a decade of fieldwork among Bengali scroll painters and singers in Medinipore District, West Bengal, India, this talk questions the dichotomy between tradition and modernity and contributes to the ongoing debates concerning whether globalization leads to more heterogeneity or homogeneity. The conclusion suggests that local traditions are resilient enough to withstand the totalizing forces of global economic and aesthetic flows, thereby allowing for emergent forms of alternative modernity to find expression among the subaltern classes that are often considered to be the victims of globalization.
