Speakers:

G. P. Deshpande is a retired Professor of Centre of East Asian Studies, School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi, India. He is a renowned Marathi playwright and has received various awards for his plays, including this year's Lifetime achievement award (Marathi Literature) by the Maharashtra Foundation. He is the founder-editor of 'Journal of Arts and Ideas' (New Delhi). Apart from his diverse publications on International relations, China's domestic and foreign affairs, Indian politics, performing arts and cultural affairs in noted journals (in English and Marathi) which he has authored and edited, he has penned several essays on social and literary criticism, which have been collectively published in the book 'Dialectics of Defeat: The Problems of Culture in Postcolonial India' by Seagull.

Urmila Bhirdikar is a contract faculty in the School of Language, Literature and Cultural Studies in the newly established Central University of Gujarat, Gandhinagar, India. She has been awarded a fellowship from India Foundation for the Arts, Bangalore under 'Art Documentation and Research Programme' for a project on "Marathi Farce in the 19th Century". She has recently finished her doctoral thesis on "A Sociological Study of the Practice of Female Impersonation in Marathi Theatre in the Late Nineteenth Century and Early Twentieth Century''. She is a trained vocalist in Indian classical music and has authored number of publications on the tradition of music in Marathi theatre, popularly known as 'Sangeet Natak' (Marathi Opera).
