Within this research focus of the department, diverse projects aim at developing new interdisciplinary approaches for the study of festivity, both in historical and in contemporary perspectives.

The fields to be explored are for example:

  • Instances of specific festivals as they are celebrated and understood in different regions, in their normative and mythological textual representations, and by the diverse actors involved (see )
  • Festivals as 'Cultural Heritage'
  • Questions regarding actors' participation and agency
  • The workings of festivity in situations of cultural flux and mobility
  • Festivals in the context of religious and national (or group specific) agenda
  • Festival as a performative genre
  • Festivity as a source of conflict and reconciliation
  • Festivity as focal point for economic and ritual activities
