▍ Vedic etymology and the Nirukta of Yāska
Dr. Sukumar Chattopadhyay (Banaras Hindu University, India)
Nirukta of Yāska is the earliest work on vedic etymology. It is necessary for establishing the meaning of the transmitted vedic texts. It complements the science of grammar (Vyākaraṇa) which is aimed towards a comprehensive analysis of Sanskrit language. This intensive course will introduce the Nirukta of Yāska and discuss selected topics based on readings of the Sanskrit text.
Dr. Sukumar Chattopadhyay is associate professor at the department of Sanskrit (Banaras Hindu University, India). His main area of interest is Vedic studies including the Nirukta (etymology) and Pāṇinian Sanskrit grammar. Before joining Banaras Hindu University, he was working at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts where he was instrumental in editing several volumes of Kalātattvakośa. Dr. Chattopadhyay has been visiting fellow of a number of institutions including the Asien-Afrika-Institut (Hamburg).
