▍ Palm-leaf Manuscripts in Southeast Asia: Demonstration of Creating a Database of Pāli Tipitaka (Survey, Digitization and Transcription)

Dr. Suchada Srisetthaworakul
(College of Religious Studies, Mahidol University, Center for the Study of Ancient Manuscripts, Dhammachai Tipitaka Project)
In collaboration with the
Members of the Digitization Section of Dhammachai Tipitaka Project

Palm-leaf manuscripts serve as the primary sources preserving the texts of the Pāli canon for a long time. They are invaluable materials for studying Buddhism and Buddhist Studies. However, a large number of manuscripts have not been well preserved. Many important manuscripts are damaged or lost. Therefore, the creation of a database of palm-leaf manuscripts of the Pāli Canon becomes a necessary method to access to the materials for the field of Pāli and Buddhist Studies in the age of technology.

This presentation will demonstrate the process of creating a database of palm-leaf manuscripts of the Pāli canon: survey, digitization and transcription which has been conducted in the Dhammachai Tipitaka Project.
