New Catalogus Catalogorum : An Overview

Prof. Dr. Siniruddha Dash
(University of Madras)

This talk will provide an overview of the New Catalogus Catalogorum (NCC) which is an updated and expanded version of Catalogus Catalogorum (CC) of Theodor Aufrecht (1891). The scope of NCC is widened by adding other ancient Classical Languages like Pāli, Prākṛta and Apabhraṁśas along with Sanskrit. The NCC, completed in 42 volumes (of which 39 volumes are published so far), covers more than 1000 catalogues (compared to 56 by Aufrecht) and several other lists including journals and historical studies on diverse subjects.

Besides presenting an overview of the NCC, it will also focus on the methodology, resource materials, the commentary tradition, classification of the subjects, chronology of the authors and their works, etc. that are significant for providing a more comprehensive picture of Ancient Indian knowledge systems.

Prof. Dr. Siniruddha Dash is formerly Professor and Head of the Dept. of Sanskrit, University of Madras and Director & Chief Editor of the New Catalogus Catalogorum (2000-2014). At present, he is President of the Panini Educational and Cultural Trust, Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
