Southeast Asian Buddhist Manuscripts: With a Special Reference to the Palm-leaf Manuscripts at Otani University

Prof. Dr. Shobha Rani Dash
(Otani University, Kyoto)
Dr. Suchada Srisetthaworakul
(Digital Archive Section, Otani University, Kyoto; Center for the Study of Ancient Manuscripts, Thailand)

Southeast Asian manuscript tradition covers a wide range of subjects, texts and scripts. Among them a substantial share of manuscripts is related to Buddhism. This is also the case with Thailand where influence of Buddhism, which is noticed in all aspects of Thai religious and social life, is strongly evident in its manuscript tradition as well. Almost three-fourth of Thailand's palm-leaf manuscripts are related to Buddhism. Although these manuscripts are from Thailand, the script used in them is not Thai, but Khom (Khmer) or Tham.

This talk will introduce the large collection of Southeast Asian manuscripts at the Otani University (Kyoto) and will further discuss the important features specific to the Southeast Asian palm-leaf manuscripts related to Buddhism.
