Since 1970, clippings from four leading Indian newspapers (The Hindu, The Statesman, Pioneer and The Hindustan Times) were regularly supplied to the History Department of the South Asia Institute by its Delhi Branch Office. In 2002, this service was discontinued as facilities for archival research were made available on the internet by various South Asian newspapers. The collection consists of 633 boxes containing about 400,000 newspaper clippings. The selection could be maintained at a high standard for more than a quarter of a century. Covering a wide range of themes, the collection focuses on issues of Indian foreign policy and home affairs. It is arranged systematically according to subjects. While some of the headings are certainly debatable (e.g. “Indian-born religions” vs. “Others”; “Muslim” and “British period” of Indian history etc.), the "index" will certainly serve researchers as a valuable tool for accessing a unique collection of sources on India’s contemporary history. It is, therefore, reproduced here without alteration.
