Description of PhD Thesis
Filth and Ambiguity in Humanitarian Volunteering Against the utilitarian understanding of humanitarian work as a normalizing activity, this research focuses on the border experiences, ethical ambiguity, and cognitive dirtiness of humanitarian encounters in Kolkata – one of the cult destinations for volunteering in the world. Aimed at highlighting the role of filth in today’s humanitarian (bio)politics, the research departs from phenomenology of volunteering, draws parallels with various transgressive practices in mysticism and charity, and finds the clues to the obscure powers of filth in philosophy and psychoanalysis.
