Short Biography

Heribert Beckmann obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology and Islamic Studies from Tübingen University in 2012. For his Bachelor Dissertation he carried out anthropological fieldwork in North Kyrgyzstan. In 2013 he was awarded a Master’s degree in the MA Social Anthropology of Development from SOAS, University of London, after which he returned to Tübingen University to work as a researcher in the cooperative research centre (SFB) 1070 „Resource Cultures.“ He conducted long term anthropological fieldwork in a rice-cultivating village in Tamil Nadu, India, in several stages between 2014 and 2017 for his doctoral dissertation with the title „‘You’ll only have rice in your hands, if you have your feet in the mud!’ Changes in the Enactment of Rice, Body, Environment, and Social Inequality in a Rice- Cultivating Village in Tamil Nadu, India.“ In March 2018 he completed his doctoral degree under the supervision of Prof. Gabriele Alex. His main interests lie in the anthropology and sociology of food, agriculture, and nutrition, the anthropology of development, and environmental anthropology in and beyond South Asia. His current research focus is on the experience and understanding of ‚diseases of modernity’ among residents of rural and urban Tamil Nadu.
