Philipp Zehmisch ist Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter für Ethnologie am Südasien-Institut. Er forscht zu politischer Anthropologie, Migration, Subalternität, und Ethik, sowie zu den zeitgenössischen Folgen der Teilung Indiens, die er mit und durch die Theorien der Borderland Studies zu verstehen sucht. Sein regionaler Fokus ist sowohl in Indien als auch in Pakistan, wo seine postdoktorale Forschung zu den „Dialektiken der Teilung: Ethiken der Kollaboration und des Widerstandes im postkolonialen Pakistan“ angesiedelt ist. Neben seiner Forschung in Pakistan arbeitete Philipp bis August 2020 als Assistenzprofessor für Anthropologie und Soziologie (Visiting Faculty) an der Lahore University of Management Sciences. Die erste Phase seiner Postdoktorandenforschung führte er von 2015 bis 2017 mit einem Stipendium des Center for Advanced Studies der LMU München durch. Philipp studierte Ethnologie (Magister 2007) am Institut für Sozial- und Kulturanthropologie der LMU München, wo er auch 2015 promoviert wurde. Seine Doktorarbeit “Mini-India: The Politics of Migration and Subalternity in the Andaman Islands“ (Oxford University Press, Delhi, 2017) wurde mit zwei Dissertationspreisen ausgezeichnet. Außerdem verfasste Philipp mehrere Buchkapitel und Zeitschriftenartikel und ist Mitherausgeber von „Manifestations of History: Time, Space and Community in the Andaman Islands“ (mit Frank Heidemann, Delhi: Primus, 2016) und „Soziale Ästhetik, Beziehungen, Medialität: Beiträge aus der Ethnologie“ (mit Ursula Münster, Jens Zickgraf und Claudia Lang, Lit: Berlin, 2018).
