The Fierce Goddess at Gajnikhedi: The Devīmāhātmya and a Medieval Tantric Temple in Central India

​​This lecture explores the emergence and materialisation of the cult of the Fierce Goddess, best known as Cāmuṇḍā or Kālī, through the interwoven perspectives of textual narrative and temple space. The early medieval period marks a decisive moment in the crystallisation of the Goddess's cult, reflected in her expanding presence across Purāṇic literature and sculptural programmes. The seminal eighth-century Śākta text, the Devīmāhātmya, narrates the appearance of Cāmuṇḍā as an embodiment of divine wrath, and she gradually enters temple spaces from this period onward. In North India, from the tenth century, Cāmuṇḍā increasingly appears within major Śaiva temple complexes, yet Śākta stone temples dedicated exclusively to the Fierce Goddess remain exceptionally rare.

This lecture introduces an eleventh-century Cāmuṇḍā temple near Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh, one of the only surviving examples of its kind in Central India and one that has not been the subject of any prior scholarly study. The shrine preserves a largely intact sculptural programme that is activated through circumambulation, inviting a narrative and theological reading that resonates with the Devīmāhātmya while simultaneously adapting in its details to foreground more transgressive aspects of the Goddess. The temple's iconographic and architectural features further exemplify a distinctive synthesis of Purāṇic and Tantric elements, showcasing both pan-Indian themes and local nuances. Drawing together textual evidence and material sources from the temple itself and nearby collections, this lecture reconstructs the site's layered history and considers its continued role as an active pilgrimage centre for devotees of Cāmuṇḍā from the medieval period to the present.​
