B.A. South Asian Studies

The Bachelor of Arts programme South Asian Studies is an interdisciplinary and practically oriented study programme at the South Asia Institute with the objective of imparting practical language skills and philological, cultural and socio-scientific knowledge.

Within Germany, the programme at the South Asia Institute finds itself in a unique environment that is characterized by interdisciplinary teaching and research and that covers the regional diversity of South Asia. For more than 40 years, academics of the South Asia Institute are concerned with the countries Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan und Sri Lanka. The disciplines represented at the South Asia Institue are Development Economics, Anthropology, Modern South Asian Languages and Literatures (Modern Indology), Cultural and Religious History of South Asia (Classical Indology), History of South Asia, Geography and Political Science of South Asia.

Intensive language courses offered within the B.A. South Asian Studies are Bengali, Hindi, Classical Tibetan, Sanskrit, Tamil, Colloquial Tibetan and Urdu. Additionally, language courses in Dari, Nepali, Pali and Sinhala are offered every term. The expert knowledge imparted within the B.A. South Asian Studies is supplemented by the acquisition of generic yet South Asia related competences. Another feature of the B.A. South Asian Studies is the "mobility window" that offers students with the B.A. South Asian Studies being their major the opportunity to prove their theoretical knowledge in on-site practice.

General information

The programme B.A. South Asian Studies is multidisciplinary. The manifold range of disciplines at the South Asia Institute enables the students to specialize individually according their own interests and ideas or to diversify their studies. At the same time, the regional focus on South Asia will always be maintained as the framework of studies. There are three types of modules: compulsory modules, required elective modules and elective modules. The two compulsory modules are The introductory lecture at the beginning of your study and the examination module at the end of your study. Within the required elective modules you choose one of the many offered South Asian languages and several courses in the field of generic and career-oriented competences. Most of your studies are comprised by the elective modules, in which you may choose and compose the disciplines offered at the South Asia Institute freely.
