M. A. Seminar every Thursday by Dr. Liebig
We cordially invite:
The Relevance of Kautilya's Arthashastra for Modern India
Lecturer: Dr. Michael Liebig
Date: Thursdays, 14:00 – 16.00
Venue: SAI, Room E 11
Arthashastra, written around 320 BC, is a foundational text of
political theory and theorized statecraft as well as a case in point for
the 'modernity of tradition' (Rudolph & Rudolph) in modern India.
Around the world Kautilya is known as ‘India’s Machiavelli’! The
emergent 'Kautilya discourse' in the Indian strategic community in
recent years demonstrates 're-use of the past' (Mitra) as a central
feature of Indian politics.
(German optional in the seminar)
