Open Access? The city as laboratory, studio, archive
Cities reflect and stimulate cultural, social, economic and political lifeworlds and dynamics in fascinating ways across time and space. To study cities means to dive into the micro-histories and everyday worlds of such habitats, but also to refrain from isolating them as individual cases - their entanglement with other cities in a world of cities (J. Robinson), their interstitial fabric across the mentioned domains, and to reposition binary oppositions such as ‘public’ and ‘private’, ‘tangible’ and ‘intangible’, ‘centre’ and ‘periphery’, to mention but a few. Connecting domains of scholarly research across universities in the ‘Global South’ and ‘Global North’ and connecting it to the challenges to educate new generations of students and practitioners is one of the aims of this workshop. This also means learning from each other’s regional and disciplinary position, and to encourage conversations on a long-term scale by considering innovative formats of research-based learning and exchange.
This one-day workshop focuses on the ways in which research on cities and urban change can facilitate stronger interdisciplinary ties across academic institutions and with respect to research-based teaching. It addresses themes such as urban design for ‘open’ and ‘social’ cities of the 21st century, the role of art practice in and about the city, or in/tangible cultural heritage in rapidly changing urban environs. Other themes to be considered are in what way the city can be ‘archived’ and material be produced for open access to generate transdisciplinary discussions, how to study urban responses to natural and man-made crises (e.g., earthquake, climate change), social inequality, migration and cultural diversity. The format of this workshop is geared towards an application for faculty and student-exchange between the School of Planning and Architecture (SPA) in Delhi, the Department of Art and Design at Kathmandu University and the Heidelberg Centre for Transcultural Studies/Forum Urban Spaces. Input statements will come from Arunava Dasgupta (SPA), Sujan Chitrakar (KU) and Christiane Brosius (HCTS). Funded by Forum Urban Spaces (ForUS), Cluster of Excellence, Field of Focus 4.
