The workshop is taking place on 11th-12th December 2014, from 10.00 am, Room 011 at the Institute of Medical Psychology, Bergheimerstr. 20, Heidelberg.
Abstract:
Violence appears to be a decisive and pervasive factor in defining religious discourses, practices and identities, while at the same crossing several dimensions ranging from mythical accounts of foundational events to theological speculations on theodicy, from influencing ritual practices to providing specific justifications to religiously driven political violence. Mimetic, structural, symbolic, physical, psychological, visible or invisible, religious violence appears to be always meaningful and with a purpose. Drawing from several disciplines this workshop aims to address, highlight and analyze the multi-faceted issues related to religious violence in order to explore its web of entangled dimensions encompassing myth, praxis and politics.
