Welcome to Dr. Heiko Frese
We welcome Dr. Heiko Frese as our guest at the Department of Modern South Asian Languages and Literatures of the South Asia Institute.  He will replace Prof. Harder during his research sabbatical at the department in winter semester 2014/15.
Dr. Frese studied Indology with minor subjects Islamic studies and philosophy at the University of Kiel. In 1999 he received his PhD at the Institute of Indology at the University of Leipzig on Nepali historiography ("Variationen von Wirklichkeit"). From 1997 to 2000 he worked as a research assistant at the Institute of Indology and Central Asian Studies at the University of Leipzig. Thereafter he was a Research Associate in the DFG priority program "Umstrittene Zentren und Identitäten in Orissa". Since 2003 he has been a visiting professor, a research associate, a lecturer, a work contract fulfiller, a corrector, a teacher,  a student, and a human (simultaneously and alternately) in Heidelberg.

His major fields of study:
  • Andhra Pradesh, Nepal, Orissa - Telugu, Nepali, Oriya, Hindi, Sanskrit
  • Historiography, history of India in the 17th - 20th centuries
  • Postmodern theory, theory and method in history
