Kurzseminar von Prof. Frank J. Korom: "South Asian Religions and Diaspora Studies"
Datum:    Monday, 25.6.2012
Zeit:     4-7.15 pm / 16-19.15 Uhr
Ort:    SAI, Room Z10

The purpose of the seminar is to introduce students to the concept and the study of diasporas within the sphere of religious culture originating in the Indian Subcontinent. What forms of responses result from the forced and/or voluntary movements of religious communities from South Asia to other parts of the world? How do cultural and social contexts inform the ways that religion adapts to new environments? How does the transplantation of religion from one location to another enhance or impede a given religion's growth and development? These questions shall be explored by using a number of case studies from the burgeoning literature on this topic. The theoretical framework for the course will draw from Appadurai's notion of the "scapes" that characterize up global modernity.
