Abstract:
The presentation will discuss the historical background, context and maturity of the Siraiki political movement and ethno-linguistic awareness and foreground the significance of associating the political and the literary. It indicates how poets can also be regarded as political activists and that their poetic expressions leave a deeper impact on the readers as compared to any other literary form. Belonging to a postcolonial nation has largely impacted and complicated their literary expression, their attachment to their mother culture, and, most significantly, their efforts towards grappling with the poetic forms for expressing resistance against postcolonial rulers by creating a bridge between poetry, art and folk tradition, the best example of which is their association with mysticism.
Dr. Nukhbah Langah received her PhD from the University of Leeds, UK, and returned to Pakistan in 2009. Her area of interest is postcolonial literatures with an emphasis on Siraiki language and literature. Her research interests broadly include postcolonial theory, translation studies, resistance poetry, and ethnic literatures from South Asia. She has published various articles and poetry translations in international journals. Her forthcoming book is title Poetry as Resistance: Islam & Ethnicity in Postcolonial Pakistan (Routledge 2011). She is currently an Associate Professor and Chairperson at the Department of English at Forman Christian College University.
