World Refugee Day: Donations for Pakistani refugees
20 June 2009 is World Refugee Day: The United Nations High Comissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) calls attention to the dire situation of the more than 42 million people who are fleeing from persecution, violent conflicts, war and human rights violations. The South Asia Institute (SAI) of Heidelberg University would like to specifically point to the difficult situation of refugees in Pakistan where according to our information appr. 3 million people had to leave their home.

Especially afflicted are the regions Swat, Buner, Dir lower and Dir upper. The refugees have taken shelter with family members in other regions or in makeshift camps provided by the Pakistani government. However, they are in need of nearly all necessary equipment and do not have any medical care. In this situation, the SAI has started a donation campaign to fund help for the refugees. Together with the SAI's representative in Islamabad, donations will be used directly to support individual refugee families. The transactions will be handled by the "Friends and Patrons of the SAI" and - in Pakistan - by the local representatives of the SAI. It is therefore possible to support those in need directly and without much bureaucracy.

If you would like to help, please transfer your donation to the following bank account:

Vereinigung der Freunde und Förderer des Südasien-Instituts, keyword: Flüchtlingshilfe Pakistan, Bank: Sparkasse Heidelberg, BLZ: 672 500 20, Account number: 1300695. A donation receipt can be sent to you once you notify us of your address - to do so, please sent an e-mail to mhake@sai.uni-heidelberg.de.
