From February 18th to 23rd 2013 the International Workshop on “Water & Sacred Spaces: A Case-Study of the Ellora-Khuldabad-Daulatabad Historic Region” organized by the South Asia Institute was held in Ellora. The Indian village is well-known for its cave-temple-complex, which belongs to the UNESCO world heritage site.

The former doctoral student of the department of Anthropology, South Asia Institute, Dr. Johannes Quack, was honored with the Max Weber Prize for Junior Research for his dissertation entitled "Disenchanting India: Organized Rationalism and Criticism of Religion in India" , which was written in 2009.

Starting in February 2013, Dr. Juliane Dame, research associate at the Geography Department at SAI, heads a newly established Junior Research group at the interdisciplinary Heidelberg Center for the Environment (HCE).

Prof. Niels Gutschow and Prof. Axel Michaels have produced a number of documentaries on restoration and rituals in India, Nepal and Japan. Shot by cameraman Christian Bau, the films have been realised in cooperation with Thede Film Production in Hamburg.
