Exhibition at Alpine Museum, Munich (19/03/2015-10/01/2016)

From March 19th 2015 to January 10th 2016 the exhibition “Over the Himalaya. The expedition to India and Central Asia 1854 to 1858 by the Schlagintweit Brothers” (Über den Himalaya. Die Expedition der Brüder Schlaginweit nach Indien und Zentralasien 1854 bis 1858) organized by the Deutsche Alpenverein (DAV) will be opening at Alpine Museum, Munich.

Lothar Lutze passes away

Lothar Lutze, Emeritus Professor, Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, passed away on the night of 4 March in Berlin, in the presence of his family.

Lothar Lutze (born on September 7th 1927) taught at the SAI from 1965 to 1992. He was a passionate lover of literature, and widely recognized as a translator of modern literature in Hindi, Bengali, and other South Asian Languages. Lothar Lutze was awarded with the Tagore- as well with the George-Grierson-Prize. For his outstanding contributions to literature and education he received the Padma-Shri-Award in 2006. Under his direction, numerous well-known authors from South Asia found their way to HD. He is fondly remembered by many of his students as a compelling university teacher.

The SAI is saddened by Professor Lutze's loss, and wishes to express its profound sympathy to his loved ones.

Welcome to Prof. Dr. Partha S. Ghosh
We cordially welcome Prof. Dr. Partha S. Ghosh as Visiting Professor at the Department of History at the South Asia Institute. He holds a scholarship by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH) and will stay from March 4th – May 30th at the SAI.
