The South Asia Institute (SAI), founded in 1962, is an interdisciplinary centre for research and
teaching on South Asia (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka).
As a central academic institute of Heidelberg University, its role is to advance
cross-cultural knowledge and understanding by combining social sciences with the humanities.
As such, the institute is the only one of its kind in Germany.
