Power Politics and Maritime Governance in the Indian Ocean

On the 2nd, 3rd and 4th of July, 2012 an international symposium titled, Power Politics and Maritime Governance in the Indian Ocean will take place at the Internationales Wissenschaftsforum Heidelberg (IWH). Crucial trade interests, untapped energy resources and mounting security concerns are propelling countries to rethink their strategies in the Indian Ocean. This applies to littoral countries and extra-regional actors like China, Japan, the EU and US, unleashing unprecedented dynamics of competition and cooperation. Scholars from Asia, Europe and the United States will examine historical and cultural networks within the Indian Ocean, emerging structures of maritime governance, evolving forms of alliance building and counter-balancing to discuss whether a ‘region’ of the Indian Ocean is in the making.
