South Asia Institute at the at the International conference: “Global environmental change in the Himalayan Region: Controversies, Impacts, Futures” (6-8 November)
A remarkable group of five scholars from the Department of Geography of the South Asia Institute, Heidelberg University will participate at the International Conference “Global Environmental Change in the Himalayan Region: Controversies, Impacts, Futures”, which will take place in New Delhi at India Habitat Centre, between November 6-8. Led by the chair of the Department, Professor Dr. Marcus Nuesser, the group includes Dr. Ravi Baghel, Dr. Juliane Dame, Dipl.-Ing. Nils Harm and Dr. Susanne Schmidt.

Organized by Heidelberg University jointly with Free University Berlin and in partnership with TERI University, the international conference is attended by leading experts, scholars and researchers in the field, as well as junior researchers from top academic institutions, NGOS and relevant governmental organizations.  The conference will consist of presentations analysing historical records of climate change, remote sensing of environmental change, direct and indirect impacts of climate change, human development, socio-hydrology and changes in the cryosphere, to name just a few.

The conference will open with a keynote speech by Professor Dr. Marcus Nuesser on “Glacier Changes on a Himalayan Scale: Scientific, Cultural and Political Dimensions”, which will be followed by the festive inauguration of the exhibition on “Environmental Change on the Himalayan Scale” that identifies changes of glaciers, vegetation, land use and urban development in Himalayas.
