Lecture in honour of Hermann Kulke: An illustrious circle of historians celebrate one of theirs
On Thursday, 8th April, eminent historians gathered at the IIC Annexe to pay tribute to the work of Professor Hermann Kulke, who was awarded the Padma Shri for his contributions in the field of Indian History just one night before in a festive ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Prof. Kulke's long standing colleagues and friends Prof. Bhairabi Prasad Sahu and Prof. Kesavan Veluthat, both teaching at the Department of History at Delhi University, spoke on the awardee's achievement in research on state formation in medieval India and Souteast Asia, and its implications for historical research on state building as such.
The session was chaired by luminary Prof. Romila Thapar, who concisely reflected upon Prof. Kulke's work and ways to take forward comparative historical research on state formation in its socio-historical contexts.

The event, which was organised by the Branch Office of the South Asia Institute and Cluster 'Asia and Europe' in collaboration with the Indian Council of Historical Research, was attended by a wide range of Delhi academia, but also representatives from the German Embassy and German Science Organisations and Max Mueller Bhavan.

A visibly moved Prof. Kulke said between wine, snacks and chats on the terrace: "This gathering of friends and colleagues on my behalf means as much to me as the winning of the prize itself".
